Browning Skin minus the Sun
No matter what the original or ethnic color of your skin is, if your skin is darkening on its own without sun exposure, a lack of sunscreen is not the problem.
Darkening skin or hyperpigmentation is not uncommon. Sun spots and liver spots do happen. But when skin darkens in larger masses such as on shins, for example, primary adrenal insufficiency could be at work. This is a long-term endocrine disorder causing adrenal glands not to produce enough steroid hormones. If skin darkens and thickens, type-2 diabetes also may be lurking. Make sure to visit your endocrinologist.
